Brett Young’s albums have always featured songs written about or inspired by his wife Taylor, which was awkward and a little complicated early on in his career. “Taylor and I, for anybody that doesn’t know our story, we met Thanksgiving 2008,” explains Brett. “And you know, we broke up a handful of times, and so when I moved to Nashville, that was our last break up that we had, was like right when I got here.”

By the time Brett and Taylor had gotten back together after he moved to Nashville, he had released his self-titled debut album, featuring songs he’d written about their break-up, like “Mercy” and “Like I Loved You.” And Brett says, “Now all of the sudden I have songs on the radio. Well, it turns out she’s hearing those songs on the radio and going like, this is the weirdest thing ever. And so, the hardest thing, I think for her, were like the break up songs about her. Cause now we’ve gotten back together and she’s listening to these sad songs.”

However, now that Brett and Taylor have been happily married for a couple of years, sharing new songs he’s written about her or that she inspired is pretty easy now. “In a happy love story I don’t really have to explain the music anymore,” says Brett.
