Warner Bros. has announced a fifth installment of The Matrix is in development, with Drew Goddard set to direct.

The upcoming sequel will be the first not directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski, but Lana is attached as an executive producer. Plot details are under wraps, but the story will build on the fantasy world while staying true to the series’ roots.

It’s unclear if Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return, but Goddard is excited to contribute to the iconic franchise.

The Matrix franchise began in 1999, and the fourth installment, released in 2021, underperformed at the box office.
